De-adminship warning
[edit]Dear Bastique. I am writing to you to inform you that you are in danger of losing your adminship on Commons because of inactivity.
If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days of today's date, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose administrator rights.
You can read the de-admin policy at Commons:Administrators/De-adminship.

- Oh, poo. Here I thought I was getting messages by email, and I wasn't. And this never came up as a notice when I logged into Commons. I'm sad about this, didn't really want it to happen. Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 03:46, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
Personality rights deletion
[edit]I'm with you when it comes to deleting on a goodwill base rather than playing "gotcha". You don't have be a lone wolf. The deletion discussion mentioned on the mailing list had me pretty horrified. Time to be more active on the DR page... --Dschwen (talk) 16:34, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, it's pretty a fairly daunting discussion. The trick, I think, for some, is to maintain composure and not insult the intelligence or question motive of those who have been involved in the discussions. I think the regrettable decisions have been combination of poorly worded requests + limited involvement in discussions + focus on licensing over courtesy. I believe it's only a matter of broadening our thought process. Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 18:12, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
Double DR closure
[edit]Because of your double closure, overlooking the two preceeding DRs for the same file, and for overlooking the evidence made in the arguments in the DR, I am forced to take this matter to AN/U. If you would like to defend why you kept it, despite all the evidence, feel free to. This is not about on you or your adminship, this is simply a matter that must be dealt with, and IDK where else to take it. Fry1989 eh? 06:05, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
Thank you Bastique for finally pretty this issue to rest. Jetijones (talk) 16:49, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Hey bastique, in relation to File:68735-Kholoud.jpg, I have reverted the OTRS permission, due to its appearance on other websites before the upload date, such as this from 7 February 2011. It is possible that Tarteeb is the copyright holder, and that they have uploaded, but there are obviously going to be some doubt (low res, etc), that only OTRS can fulfill. russavia (talk) 00:39, 5 June 2012 (UTC)
- Hey Russavia, Tarteeb has already contacted OTRS and fulfilled that matter... the OTRS agent instructed Tarteeb to upload it himself. The evidence is in the email. Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 01:14, 5 June 2012 (UTC)
- Let me be clear, the uploader has identified himself as the copyright holder prior to uploading the image. The OTRS agent involved instructed the uploader how to upload and release the image. The fact that the image is low res and appears on the web as of a prior date does not negate the uploader's claim of ownership. The image would have been released to news agencies prior to their upload here to Commons. The uploader intentionally chose a release on Commons releasing the image which is good enough, isn't it? Copyright ownership + intent to release + the right steps? No problem. I don't see the reason to cause people to jump through bigger hoops. Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 01:25, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Calder Eagle
[edit]Do I understand that the outcome of Commons:Deletion requests/File:Eagle by A.Calder.jpg means that my own photos of this same sculpture, which were deleted as copyvios, may now be restored? - Jmabel ! talk 15:49, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
- I closed the discussion because it was a new discussion that had unwittingly reopened a settled discussion. If the underlying sculpture is in fact in the public domain because of lack of notice, then any photographs of the sculpture would be permitted as photographs of a public domain piece of artwork. I advise you to take this to COM:U and cite that precedent. Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 15:53, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
- I just saw that you said your files were deleted as "out of scope" rather than for copyright reasons. If they were deleted out of scope, then this discussion would not apply. Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 15:56, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
- Never mind, your phrasing "out of scope for copyright reasons" confused me. If they were deleted on grounds of copyright, then if the underlying sculpture is public domain, they should, in fact, be restored. Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 15:59, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Hello!
When you edited this image 2 years ago, you added four fragments to it, but you did not specify their origin. IMHO it is unlikely that each of 4 pictures is either a public domain image or your own work. Including other images in your work without providing the attribution may violate licenses of those images. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 18:30, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
- Hello!
- It's unlikely I did anything to violate licenses. So no. Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 04:55, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
- Je ne vous crois pas. Spécifiez l'attribution s.v.p. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 08:58, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
- Note, the above reads "I don't believe you. Please specify attributions." This user is accusing me--someone with an active history on Commons, as an administrator (still), bureaucrat, and checkuser; a former steward, as well as having been a longtime employee of the Wikimedia Foundation--of lying. In the first place, we don't accuse other users of lying without evidence, or past history of making things up. Since I'm not active lately, I don't know if this kind of uncivil behavior is becoming normal around here or not, but it's a regrettable trend. Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 22:32, 18 November 2012 (UTC)
- I don't care that you don't believe me. That is your problem, not mine. The attribution is already perfectly specified and clear. If there are portions of images there that you don't think I created myself, then I used public domain images that don't require attribution. So stop menacing me, s.v.p. --Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 22:15, 18 November 2012 (UTC)
Incnis, you have any reason to doubt Cary here? Any proof any of those images aren't PD as he says? Béria Lima msg 23:14, 18 November 2012 (UTC)
- Well, Incnis Mrsi was absolutely right in his suspicions, those images are not public domain. At the very least the guitar (File:Babicz Octane Blue Flame.jpg) used without any attribution was CC-BY-SA 3.0. I'm not even going to search origin of other added pictures, it's the burden of uploader, not mine. --Trycatch (talk) 14:29, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
- You are making claims (the guitar used;) as well with no factual basis. You also find it easy to accuse people of things that are unprovable. Again, it doesn't matter that you think one image is derived from the other, it does not make it a fact. The included image is so entirely different from the earlier image that making any attribution or proof of derivation from one to the other is impossible. The included portions are so small that proof of derivation is impossible to make, and the de minimis nature of their use (they do not actually provide any creative value on their own originality to the underlying SVG). There is no copyright "violation" involved.
- I'm sure that both you and Incnis Mrsi can find better things to do with your time than nit-picking fights with Commons users who have been less active in recent years. Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 16:24, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
- Rather than get into a war of principals with people who would rather start fights with other users over picayune matters, I've replaced the tiny de minimis image thumbnails with other tiny de minimis images thumbnails. Maybe the users who spend time questing these can get a life now. Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 19:40, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
- No, it was not de minimis, not even close, and yeah, it was a blatant copyright violation. Btw, expected reaction was something like "thanks for pointing out of my mistake" and not that bunch of nonsense attacks, but thanks for cleaning up after yourself anyway -- I understand that for some people it's just hard to be polite. --Trycatch (talk) 09:37, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Btw, expected reaction is something like, "It looks like there might be a problem with this image" and not that bunch of nonsense attacks. I'm sure you work hard to see the project is spotless, but it probably blinds you to the way you deal with other people--your way of handling people leaves a lot to be desired. - Was File:Babicz_Octane_Blue_Flame.jpg (its JPEG data) included to your upload entirely? If not, then by which factor was it scaled down? Incnis Mrsi (talk) 18:05, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
- Also, there is no such thing as a "copyright violation." The matter involved licensing, not copyright. You should probably learn to figure out what it is you're talking about before you go to people's talk pages and berate them. Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 16:35, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Your closure of of this DR is wrong. The German FOP-regulations do differ between indoors and outdoors. This image must be deleted if this sculpture is located in a building. Copyright status: File:ShakataGaNai at SF Meetup 07.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:ShakataGaNai at SF Meetup 07.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Commons:Service d'aide has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this project page, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. |

Hello
I'm writing you as one of the most active Commons users right now. Since a while now, the idea of a dedicated Commons conference has been floating around. But since the last Wikimania concrete steps have been taken to actually make it happen next year. If you're interested in participation or maybe willing to help organize the first ever Commons Conference, I invite you to check out the project page and leave your comments; or just show your support for the idea, by signing up.
Cheers,

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Palestinian child with portrait.jpg
[edit]This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Palestinian child with portrait.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

File:Map of New York County Outlines.svg
[edit]Hi, thanks for the file!
Two questions:
- What projection was used for the map?
- What was the source file from the U.S. Census?
I'm trying to figure out how to map latitude and longitude.
Thanks again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SeanDeNigris (talk • contribs) 03:19, 3 October 2019 (UTC)
Important message for file movers
[edit]A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Can you add the border of South Sudan which became independent in 2011 in File:Wikimedia chapters.svg, File:Wikimedia chapters x.svg, File:Wikimedia chapters existing.svg and File:Wikimedia chapters existing and regional user groups.svg? (There is not a Wikipedia chapter in South Sudan.)

Wikipedia v2 logo authorship
[edit]Hey Cary! Although File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-en.svg correctly lists the Wikimedia Foundation for attribution, it would be useful to also list who at the Wikimedia Foundation actually created it. Right now, that seems to be unknown, but you are the most likely candidate since you unloaded the file. Can you confirm whether or not you are the person who actually created v2 of the Wikipedia logo? i.e. designed and implemented it? (I know Nohat designed v1 of the logo.) Why did you delete "Main Page/es
" as "not necessary"? Trying to find the Spanish-language homepage ("Portada
") within the multilingual Wikimedia Commons is not obvious. Even worse, "Portada" has the same meaning in Asturian, Catalan, Galician, Portuguese, and Spanish, so it is inappropriate to use the page title of "Portada" for the Spanish language, without specifying which specific language is being used, e.g. "Portada/es
" or "Portada/pt
". All MediaWiki installations (regardless of the language used) recognize the English-language page of "Main Page
" as the default (since the MediaWiki software is written in English, and then translated into other languages). For a multilingual wiki though, there must be a way to distinguish between multiple-language uses for the same Main Page. The best way to do this is either with a subpage, i.e. "Main Page/es
" or with a namespace, i.e. "es:Main Page
" which can then redirect to "es:Portada
." Language namespaces are not set up on Wikimedia Commons though, and "es:Main Page
" redirects to the Spanish Wikipedia, instead of to the Spanish homepage for Wikimedia Commons. Nicole Sharp (talk) 02:15, 28 March 2022 (UTC)
I transwikied this discussion to the Wikimedia Commons Village Pump since many different pages are affected (not just the one you deleted): "Commons:Village pump/Proposals#multilingual Commons

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open!
[edit]Read this message in your language
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
