Description

A wall of stacked tiffen boxes. Every Indian needs a tiffen box for lunches, a neat stack of small containers of hot food - typically in South India to be rice, a curry, dhal or sambar, and curd.

With an eye for shiny objects, one of my favorite shops in Chennai is the stainless steel shops of T. Nagar. Like grottoes of gleaming treasure, these shops solely sell implements of shiny steel (how's that for alliteration!). Stacked neatly - or more often haphazardly - from floor to ceiling one is fully immersed among piles of reflective and sometimes bewildering stuff - pots, dishes, plates, spoons, jars and containers of every shape and size.
