Correct Template for uploading the picture for the art work I take from museum

I have read When should the PD-Art tag not be used?. If I took the picture for the sculptures by myself, and sculptures maker is dead more than 100 years ago, what label should I use? Do I just do a CC-0 label (If I want to publish the picture under cc-0)? How could I tell people the original sculptures is already in the public domain?

I also been confused that it says the lighting arrangements can create the new copyright. If the museum create the lighting for the sculpture, does it mean the museum actually own the copyright for the picture (because museum created the lighting effect)? If the museum have FAQ page declare they will NOT own the copyright of any picture of the artwork. How can I link that to show that fact?

If the museum put sculpture in the yard, and the sun do the nature light to the sculpture, can I assume that the museum does NOT own the copyright?

Last, how can I separate the landscape and the artwork? For example, Geneva have "The Flower Clock", if I take a picture of it, can I say it's just a landscape (so I have full copyright for my picture) or it's an artwork create by the government? (I means since the government create it, I can assume it's in the public domain, so does not matter) But if a private company have similar thing (like the shape of their building/create some landscape on public available area), and I take a picture, can I say I have the copyright and upload it to Wiki Comments?

Tangmingxyz (talk) 11:33, 2 July 2024 (UTC)

For the first question, you can use something like {{Copyright information | photograph = {{Self|cc-0}} | sculpture = {{PD-100}}}}. --Geohakkeri (talk) 16:17, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
@Tangmingxyz: you might want to look at the approach I took at File:Sant bisbe - c. 1500 - Museu Frederic Marès 944 - 01.jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 19:17, 2 July 2024 (UTC)

Pictures downlinked from satellites

When satellite pictures are released by satellite operator, they are licensed according to that operator's policy, no problem. But, when images are dowloaded by someone else with something like SDR radio (like in this guide), who is the copyright holder of the images? Satellite operator or radio operator?

When someone downloads picture from American NOAA weather satellite, it's free either way (NOAA PD or any free licence downloader choose). But what about pictures from Chinese Fengyun or European MetOp? Trasheater Midir (talk) 17:33, 2 July 2024 (UTC)

@Trasheater Midir: Hi, The pictures are not downloaded from the satellites, but from a down-to-earth server which is operated by the satellite operator. So the pictures are under a copyright by whoever created them (except for NASA or other US government agencies). Yann (talk) 18:02, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
@Yann: “The pictures are not downloaded…” well, unless they are! A weird little corner case but nevertheless a valid thing to ask about. --Geohakkeri (talk) 18:26, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
@Yann, sorry, but have you looked at the guide I linked above? How to Download Weather Satellite Images from Space. Weather satellites downlink images in easily decodeable formats, it's one of their functions. These images can be downloaded with radio and decoded with some program (like that one). It's a hobby somewhere between satellite watching and amateur radio. See also [1] or [2] for some examples.
I'm asking precisely about such images, not about more official images that are received on the ground stations, and then sometimes released. Sorry if I was unclear. Trasheater Midir (talk) 19:01, 2 July 2024 (UTC)

Are users allowed to create categories based on their username?

For example, is it acceptable to make Category:Videos uploaded by Pdanese etc. etc.

I know some users create categories like this (e.g., QImages by <username>), but I want to make sure this is an acceptable action or if new categories should only be created to further the overall goal of the commons.

Thank you. Pdanese (talk) 17:58, 2 July 2024 (UTC)

Image I have rights to use got deleted

I uploaded an image that I have rights to use online. I uploaded the original, unedited version of the image. It got deleted because an administrator cited a news source that has an edited version of the image on it (the same source who released the image rights for my use). What steps should I take if I want to re-upload this image to make it clear to others that I have rights to use it so that they cannot just delete it? EAWDA (talk) 02:42, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

@EAWDA: I assume from context here that you are talking about a copyrighted image, where someone else holds the copyright. (You don't say just what image you are talking about, but I presume this is File:Genlin.jpg. When you uploaded that, you claimed it was your own work, which certainly did not help in sorting this out.) You personally having rights to "use the image online" is not enough for Commons. Commons only hosts copyrighted images if they offer a specific free license such as {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} that allows anyone to reuse the image, even commercially (e.g. in a newspaper, a published book for sale, or even printed as a poster) and to make derivative works. That license must come from the copyright-holder, who is usually the photographer.
There are two ways the copyright-holder can provide that permission:
  1. On a publicly visible web page that is clearly under their control, they can indicate the license for the image. This can be their personal web site, a publicly visible social media post, etc. Then anyone (including you) can link that page as the source and upload the image.
  2. They can go through the process outlined at COM:VRT, in which they send a confidential email offering the license. They can identify the image as "Genlin.jpg", the team at VRT will know what that means. Once correct permission is received and processed (which may take weeks), the file will be undeleted. Might take a little longer if the email is in Chinese, but there are people on the team who can read that. (And, of course, once undeleted, the authorship should be corrected.)
Do please read COM:VRT, which explains how you can do this in the future without getting the picture deleted along the way. Jmabel ! talk 03:05, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
Thank you @Jmabel Your pointers are very clear, which bring me to think that it may be easier for me to upload other images that I have exclusive rights to, and those that have not been published elsewhere. In that case the image would not need to undergo the processes you pointed out.
Another related question if you may enlighten me. Am I in fact uploading images at the wrong place? I'm referring to images being usable on a Wiki page, which is my ultimate purpose. That does not require it to be a commons image, or am I wrong? EAWDA (talk) 03:38, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
@EAWDA: If you are not the photographer, you would need to demonstrate why you have "exclusive rights". You'd need to go through COM:VRT yourself to establish with them the basis on which you own exclusive rights to photos you did not take. (The correspondence would be confidential; VRT is a small team of highly trusted, experienced volunteers.)
Yes, Commons is generally the best place to upload images for Wikipedia. Any image on Commons can readily be used on Wikipedia in any language; if you upload directly to a Wikipedia in a particular language, only that Wikipedia can use the image. Some of the Wikipedias (including English) have a limited ability to host certain images that are not "free enough" for Commons and are needed in their articles, but that allowance is usually quite limited (e.g. the English-language Wikipedia generally will not host images of living people on that basis). - Jmabel ! talk 04:19, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel Understood, and based on what you said it would appear to me that only a photographer of an image can effect the licenses of it for it to be usable on Wiki Commons. That bar seems to have been set incredibly high as it disregards commercially "sold" usage rights of an image. An example would be that if John Doe commissions a photographer to take portraits of John, and released all the rights of usage exclusively to John, John or his associates would still not be permissible to upload an image of him on Wiki Commons without it being taken down. I am quite new to Wiki so I may be stating the obvious here.
Also, I've done all the required steps to qualify as auto-confirmed user (over 4 days registration plus having done over 10 edits) but am still pending that status. I am trying to figure out why that is and I do see they have different requirements for different language Wikipedia, for example I remember seeing the Chinese Wikipedia page requiring users to be registered for over 5 days and done over 50 edits or something. I wonder if it is because when I registered I was on Wikipedia's Chinese page (even though all the info I filled in was in English) and that I was assigned to follow the Chinese Wikipedia requirements? EAWDA (talk) 08:22, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
Your Commons account was created on 1 July. That’s the time you first visited Commons while logged in. The “confirmation period” started that day. --Geohakkeri (talk) 08:38, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
@Geohakkeri Sorry I was referring to my Wikipedia account. EAWDA (talk) 08:47, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
@EAWDA: Each language's Wikipedia is a separate project. As you can see at Special:CentralAuth/EAWDA, you have only made two edits to English Wikipedia, so you aren't yet autoconfirmed on English Wikipedia. --bjh21 (talk) 09:38, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

"disregards commercially sold usage rights", etc.: sort of. If there is a written transfer of copyright, that can be sent to VRT. Anything less than that exposes legitimate reusers to an unacceptable risk. Consider the following scenario: you claim rights over a photo that "Photographer X" took. You upload to Commons and grant a license. "Magazine Y" uses the photo, conforming to your granted license. Photographer X threatens to sue Magazine Y for copyright infringement. Where does that leave them? - Jmabel ! talk 18:16, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

Hallo Werder Feinkost GmbH,
Request for trimming video

Is there any template that is similar to {{Remove border}} (which redirects from {{Crop video}}) that will crop not the border around the edges of a video, but marks that a video should be trimmed at a certain point? I have a video that I'm uploading now with Video2Commons that has some acceptable material for the first 5:50 or so, but the last 2:20 or so has some copyrighted work and it needs to be removed. I'm not that great with video, so I can't do it myself. :/ Any guidance on where I can post this request once the video has been converted and uploaded? —Justin (koavf)TCM 12:14, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

Said video just finished uploading: File:Eels (2013-04-25, Le Trianon, Paris, FR).webm. If someone could be kind enough to cut it off at 5:50-ish before they introduce the song at the end, that would be appreciated. Once that bit is gone, I'll embed it in Wikipedia. —Justin (koavf)TCM 13:15, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

Credit for uploading photo

Do you get credited for uploading photo? SloanBruce (talk) 23:13, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

@SloanBruce: that question is a bit unclear. (1) The file page on Commons indicates what account uploaded it. (2) If you are the photographer and choose a license that requires that you be credited, you should be credited whenever the photo is used. (3) If you upload a photo that was created and licensed by someone else, then there is no requirement that reusers credit you for having uploaded it to Commons. (4) It is permissible to create one or more hidden user categories that apply to your uploads. (5) Your uploads (you have none, so far) will all be visible at Special:ListFiles/SloanBruce, which you can access from the "Unloads" link on the top nav (assuming you don't use some exotic skin that moves it elsewhere).
Does that answer your question, or did you mean something else? - Jmabel ! talk 23:40, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

Request to upload program from meeting of the Merrie England Club, at the House of Commons, 1931.

Hello,

I have my grandfather's copy of the program for a meeting of the "Merrie England Club" in 1931. As such, I suspect this is in the common domain. As far as I know the club no longer exists. I don't know who one would ask for permission to post it; I doubt any of them are still alive. But I think this could be of historic interest as speakers at the event included: J. F. Shillaker, Esq., M.BE, M.P, Rt. Hon. ARTHUR GREENWOOD, P.C., M.P., Rev. HERBERT DUNNICO, J.P., P.C., M.P., FRED MONTAGUE Esq., M.P.

My intent is to share an image of the cover of this program on the "Merrie England" Wiki talk page. If there is interest and permission I will share images of the contents, and the signatures on the back. If there is interest, I suppose this could eventually find its way to the main wiki page.

Sincerely, Donald McLachlan DonMcL123 (talk) 17:49, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

@DonMcL123: Copyright rules differ by country; where was this program published/in what country did the meeting happen? —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 18:33, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
@DonMcL123: Unforunately, copyright can outlive organizations. If this was a 1931 UK photograph, it is possibly public domain in the UK if the photographer cannot be found with a reasonable search (web search is not enough), otherwise it's 70 years after the death of the photographer. In the United States, it won't be public domain until at least 2027. Abzeronow (talk) 19:54, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
I presume "House of Commons" meant the UK House of Commons, especially with the reference to an "M.P.". - Jmabel ! talk 20:16, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
Hi All,
Yes it is from the UK. As far as I can tell it is an etching / woodcut print on the program. It was printed by Baxter and Ewin, 7 Frith St, London. I could not find any current reference to that company. It is a program for a speaking event in the House of Commons in London. The cover has the usual where and when details. The inside left page is the menu. The inside right page is the list of speakers. On the back my grandfather collected signatures (presumably of) attendees. I would not expect something similar, like a theatre program, to be copyrighted more than 70 years. I am willing to share privately if it will help with a determination of copyright status. If someone repeatedly creating empty categories for the same title, this counts as vandalism?

As the deletion log shows:

  • 12:40, 1 July 2024 Billinghurst talk contribs deleted page Category:Kaohsiung Cingnian Night Market (empty categories per other deletion requests)
  • 16:28, 21 February 2024 Túrelio talk contribs deleted page Category:Kaohsiung Cingnian Night Market (CSD G1 (test page, accidental creation, or page containing nonsense or no valid content))
  • 17:12, 17 November 2023 Kadı talk contribs deleted page Category:Kaohsiung Cingnian Night Market (C2: Unuseful empty category) Tag: Adiutor

The page is always empty after creating and has been deleted three times, especially it has been deleted twice this year. It seems to have been created by someone who enjoys the empty category. If we create empty categories and keep them, what benefit does this bring to Commons? Or, what benefit does that have to the reader? If not, I think it will be better to protect "Category:Kaohsiung Cingnian Night Market" for a temporary time.--125.230.83.62 14:45, 5 July 2024 (UTC)

posting images made in Microsoft Word

In support of educational material and scientific presenations I frequently make images in Microsoft Word, using their drawing functions (lines, arrows, boxes, icons). Can these be freely distributed and submitted to WikiMedia? Would be great. Not sure whether especially the icons would be protected by license or not. 131.155.77.83 16:44, 5 July 2024 (UTC)

You can submit images that you drew in MSWord to the Commons and freely distribute them. As to the built in icons, you can read here about their use. So, you can use them in your images and distribute these images but cannot distribute the icons themselves. Ruslik (talk) 20:39, 5 July 2024 (UTC)

I'm trying to upload a file for our company logo. We are a deductible insurance company. What file and size should it be? I am the original designer for the logo and I'm employed by the company. Please advise. Is the Wikimedia Commons the right place to do so? Np3 1997 (talk) 21:01, 4 July 2024 (UTC)

@Np3 1997: Hi, On Commons, we only accept logos 1. if they are from a notable company, 2. if they are in the public domain or under a free license. So if your company is notable, please ask a legal representative to send a permission for a free license via COM:VRT. Alternatively, if the company has already an article on English Wikipedia, you can upload the logo there under a fair use rationale. Yann (talk) 21:51, 4 July 2024 (UTC)
To add to Yann's answer:
  • Use an SVG file if you have it, but other types are fine if you don't.
  • Any size that's recognizable, preferrably clear, and not absurdly huge is fine.
In short, don't worry too much about file type and size. Also, if the logo consists of "simple geometric shapes or text", you can upload it under PD-textlogo without having to ask permission. Kaasterly (talk) 02:15, 7 July 2024 (UTC)

Licensing: Is asking the creator enough?

Hello! A 3D artist, or an organization affiliated with them, has released slideshows with their art under CC-BY-SA before. I seek to use a work by them on Wikipedia, but this particular work, also from said organization, is from a different slideshow which doesn't say which license it's released under. This is probably an oversight; if I e-mail the organization and confirm it's released under said license, would that be enough to add it to the Commons, or does it require public proof? Kaasterly (talk) 00:00, 7 July 2024 (UTC)

@Kaasterly: Public proof or email to the VRT is required. The simplest thing is if they would indicate the license on the relevant source page; second best would be if they would indicate it on some other public-facing page clearly under their control and referencing the source page (which you can cite in the "permission" section of {{Information}} when uploading); third best would be for them to go through the VRT process. - Jmabel ! talk 02:11, 7 July 2024 (UTC)

I'm trying to upload a logo to Wikimedia Commons, but this logo has been used within the 150 or so years, so it isn't public domain, the company that owns such logo is a big corporation that can't be easily reached from my knowledge, so how would I go about posting this? Anonimo3000000 (talk) 14:00, 6 July 2024 (UTC)

@Anonimo3000000: "has been used within the 150 or so years" doesn't make a lot of sense. with "has been used within the 150 or so years" i more specifically has been used recently enough to not be public domain.
the logo im trying to post is the logo for a now defunct italian pay tv channel called "RaiSat 2", its for the italian wikipedia page since it doesnt have the image, i might do the same with 1 and 3 if i can do it for 2, the logo was last used in 1999 before the channel was renamed to just "RaiSat Ragazzi", the division that managed these channels also has been shut down since 2010, the company that owned it is still around though Anonimo3000000 (talk) 01:42, 7 July 2024 (UTC)
@Anonimo3000000: It doesn't matter when they were last used; it may matter when they were first used.
Two things are going to matter: is the logo complex enough to be copyrighted and when was it first published. Given that the station was founded in 1997, I assume it cannot be older than that, and so if it was copyrightable it is presumably still copyrighted. Italy has an unusually short term of copyright (20 years) for government, academies, public bodies, and non-profit cultural organizations, but I assume from that name this had something to do with RAI, so it is none of those apply and it would get 70 years. Still, Italy also has an unusually high threshold of originality for copyright. Can you link a page that shows the logo, so someone can judge its level of complexity?
Also, in the future, complicated copyright questions are better asked at Commons:Village pump/Copyright than on the general help desk. - Jmabel ! talk 02:07, 7 July 2024 (UTC)
yes it has to do with rai in fact it was one of their multiple pay tv channels

alternate logo https://logos.fandom.com/wiki/File:20180304_153128.jpg Anonimo3000000 (talk) 10:53, 7 July 2024 (UTC)
@Anonimo3000000: I think that hand puts it over the threshold of originality even for Italy, so it's presumably copyrighted. We can't have it on Commons without a license from RAI, which they are very unlikely to grant. It looks like if you want to use it in the it-wiki article, you can upload it directly to it-wiki, with certain conditions. See it:Wikipedia:File_non_liberi. - Jmabel ! talk 15:57, 7 July 2024 (UTC)

My double in the photo

Hello, I saw a photo, a copy of me is in the photo, even my look. But the photo was taken in 1966. I was born in 1984. Please help me find the author of the photo or the one who posted the photo. I want to find out the fate of this woman, the coincidence of face and gaze is 100% . I even thought it was Photoshop. Please tell me who can say about the photos or the woman, please write down [[:File:Hölgy esernyővel, a Március 15. tér felé nézve, 1966 Budapest. Fortepan Мария1209 (talk) 14:21, 9 July 2024 (UTC)

Anyone have an easy guide for that? Trade (talk) 14:46, 9 July 2024 (UTC)

@Trade: it's almost too simple for a guide. Download the full resolution version of the photo. Open it in GIMP (or another image editor, but that one is free and powerful). Select the portion to be blurred, by whatever selection tool is most convenient. Select Filter | Blur | Gaussian blur... from the menu. Increase "Size X" until it looks sufficiently blurred ("Size Y" should also change unless you actively delink them). Save. Upload as an overwrite.
If there is anything there for which you need more detail, let me know. - Jmabel ! talk 17:06, 9 July 2024 (UTC)

"File extension ".jpg" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (image/x-xcf)" What now? Trade (talk) 22:25, 10 July 2024 (UTC)
@Trade You want "Export" rather than "Save" from Gimp. --bjh21 (talk) 22:33, 10 July 2024 (UTC)
I figured it out. Unfortunately the default level of Gaussian blur is not enough to hide copyrighted elements. Could you tell me how to turn it up without having to redo the lines all over againTrade (talk) 21:59, 11 July 2024 (UTC)
Is this Gaussian blurring intended as a courtesy to simply prevent innocent people from seeing a copyrighted image, or is it intended to prevent distribution of that copyrighted image by sites such as Commons? Because we should be mindful of the effects of en:Deconvolution and the ability to, perhaps with favorable circumstances, reconstruct whatever you've chosen to blur.
Perhaps a better choice would be simple erasure. Just black out the offending portions of the image, erase them completely, take them out of the equation. Then, you won't leave any opportunity for reconstruction. Elizium23 (talk) 00:37, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
We usually use a Gaussian blur for this purpose. It's pretty effective if done at a high enough level of blur (the default is a very slight blur, the user has to increase the area used in blurring from 1.5 pixels to usually 15 or more (Trade: you might want to look at the GIMP manual online for how to do that), even higher for a large portion of a high-res image). The advantage to a Gaussian blur over erasure is that it leaves the scene looking pretty "normal" at low-res but only very little more legible (or even less so) at high-res so it doesn't produce a "useful" copy of the copyrighted material. See File:Albanian President Bajram Begaj hosts Army Gen. Daniel Hokanson, chief of the National Guard Bureau, for a meeting at the Office of the President in Tirana, Albania on June 8, 2023 - 2.jpg for a good example.
I think the issue of deconvolution is a red herring. This overwhelmingly arises for third-party images where we always link back to the source image, so the full, infringing version could be found in any case. It's not about making that impossible to see/find/recreate, it's about keeping the would-be infringement de minimis. - Jmabel ! talk 02:45, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

Seeking Guidance on Uploading a Key Artwork for Lobo (DC Comics) to Comply with Non-Free Content Policy

Hello, I am planning to upload an image of the original painting for "Lobo #1" from 1990 by Simon Bisley to enhance the related article. Before proceeding, I want to ensure that my approach complies with Wikipedia's non-free content policy. Here's my plan:

  1. Justification: The image showcases Simon Bisley's distinctive style that significantly transformed Lobo’s visual representation and popularity.
  2. Educational Purpose: I aim to use the image for critical commentary on the artistic evolution of the character Lobo, demonstrating Bisley's impact on comic book artistry.
  3. Copyright Info: The image is copyrighted by DC Comics, published in 1990. I intend to use it in low resolution to comply with fair use, discussing its significance in an educational context.
  4. Relevance: The image is crucial for the readers to understand the specific aesthetic and cultural shift in the character portrayal introduced by Bisley.

Additionally, I have resized the original image to a resolution of 300x453 pixels to further comply with fair use guidelines. (300x 453 px). My primary motivation is to present the most relevant and popular portrayal of Lobo. Could you please confirm if this approach is in line with the guidelines or suggest any modifications needed?

Thank you! Ketzalcoat (talk) 13:36, 11 July 2024 (UTC)

Edit file history

I know it's a silly issue, but I accidentally deleted the automatic reversion comment on the latest version of File:Coldplay Glasto24 290624 (73) (53837901483) (cropped).jpg. Is there any way I can solve this? It feels wrong having an empty field. GustavoCza (talk) 19:02, 11 July 2024 (UTC)

Edit summaries are immutable, and unless an oversighter redacts them, they will remain as-is. If you really need to place a comment in the article history, you can make some sort of inconsequential edit ("null edit") and supply the edit summary at that point. But typically, I would not recommend this. You could always place a comment on the File talk page, or some other appropriate talk page, as a more normal discussion. Multiple users needing help

User:Commander Keane recently brought it to my attention that no one seems to be monitoring Category:User needing help. I took care of a few, but there is more there than I wish to take on right now. If anyone can help some of these users, great. Remember to mark the "Helpme" template with a {{Tl}} when the issue is sorted out, or if you have begun a dialogue and will be watching the page and taking care of the issue moving forward. When you do that to the template, you effectively remove the category so that no one else is redundantly drawn to the page. - Jmabel ! talk 04:25, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

Uploading photograph from IMDb

Hello,

I'm updating the page of Cara DeLizia and I want to upload a picture of her. Can I use her IMDb photograph?

Best regards. PyroOnFire (talk) 21:02, 6 July 2024 (UTC)

No, IMDB is not freely licensed, and we only would accept freely licensed photographs of actresses post-1989. Please read COM:L Abzeronow (talk) 21:11, 6 July 2024 (UTC)
@Abzeronow, I am curious where you found the "1989" cutoff year, because it is not in COM:L and seems quite arbitrary when copyright tends to rest on the date of death of the author/creator of a work. Does a 1989 cutoff apply to all countries, or one in particular, such as the US for the specific case of DeLizia and IMDb (Amazon)? Elizium23 (talk) 21:54, 6 July 2024 (UTC)
This was a question about an American actress and an American site, so yes, I was just discussing American copyright law in such all photographs (except for U.S. federal government works) are presumed to be copyrighted if published after March 1989. Of course, many American photographs from 1929 to 1989 are still copyrighted too, but because of formalities in copyright law in that period, research has to be done to determine copyright status. As you say, works from outside the U.S. would have different copyright rules, and life of the author plus 70 years is generally the rule of thumb but there are exceptions for simple photographs in some countries. Abzeronow (talk) 03:09, 7 July 2024 (UTC)
@Elizium23: We use the 1 March 1989 date because that's when the US joined the Berne Convention per COM:US.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:01, 13 July 2024 (UTC)

@Bigben1979: It normally means that when accounts were unified across the WMF wikis 15 or so years ago, someone didn't resolve a name conflict in a timely manner, so this was added to remove ambiguity. "This logo image consists only of simple geometric shapes or text. I don't think this is correct. As there are many Trademarked Pan Am Logos registered within the USPTO website. Please see the link below.

"Description of Mark: The mark consists of the outline of a globe with the words "PAN AM" across it." doi:10.1073/pnas.1707227114 is published under the PNAS license, whatever that means. As the paper fails to specify, whether it is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND or CC BY, one must assume it’s not CC licensed at all. @PantheraLeo1359531: Interesting! Do you post it onto YouTube first, add subtitles through YouTube, and then import to Commons? EdoAug (talk) 13:32, 11 July 2024 (UTC)
Usually, yes. It depends on my workflow, where I publish it first, but the advantage is that YouTube has speak recognition and adds a (not perfect) transcription with rather accurate timestamps, so you only have to do smaller changes. Once published (video and subtitle), you can download the subtitle with online or offline software :) --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 14:17, 11 July 2024 (UTC)
Good questions, this is very much needed and there probably already is a request / code issue for it somewhere. If you post it on Youtube you can indeed just use (download and copy) the generated srt subtitles (or time-matched subtitles if you provide the text but not the timestamps). @Natalija Rosic: It looks like, in practice, you are uploading photos with no topical categories. Please do see Commons:Categories#Categorization tips. You would do well to go back and add appropriate categories to the photos you have already uploaded.
As for your technical question: what upload tool are you using (Special:UploadWizard or something else)? UploadWizard does, indeed, have a limit of 50 files at a time, and I doubt that will change in the near future. If you are replicating text content over even more files than that, you can always use a Notepad and copy-paste.
Not sure what you mean by "drag the file" (from where to where). "it says that there is a problem with the network": what is the referent of "it" here? And what exactly does the error message say? - Jmabel ! talk 18:43, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

Questions about submitting media (photos)

Hello ,

I am making edits to a page to improve the quaility and knowledge of said page. it consist of many outdated photos, If i upload pictures from my business that I own to this will other companys in the same industry be able to use these photo and say it is there work? I want to use my photos as examples for people to learn but not for others to advertize their business falsely Ronnie2871 (talk) 06:11, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

Hi Ronnie2871. You might want to take a look at COM:L because only content which meets the licensing requirements set out in that policy page is going to be OK to upload to Commons. You might also want to take a look at COM:Own work, COM:LRV and COM:ENFORCE before uploading any ways and makes sure you understand what it means to do so. Finally, another thing to understand is that Commmons is mainly concerned with the licensing of the content its hosts and whether it falls with COM:SCOPE; it's not too concerned with how such content is being used by the various Wikimedia Foundation projects like English Wikipedia. Whether an image is ultimately considered OK to use often depends on the policies of the project where you want to use it; for example, English Wikipedia's image use policy. There might be some who disagree with replacing what you consider to be "outdated" photo with ones from your own business; so, if you find that to be the case, you might have to establish a consensus in favor of a such a change. Since you appear to be asking about adding images to the English Wikipedia article "en:Sandblasting", the best place for you to discuss changing the images would be at en:Talk:Sandblasting. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:09, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
Will other companies be able to say it is their work? No, they won’t. For example, CC BY license explicitly requires that appropriate credit is given. If others claim your photos as theirs, it’s a copyright violation. --Geohakkeri (talk) 08:21, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

Sheet Music

Would sheet music be included in copyright? Cyb3rstarzzz (talk) 15:02, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

Music presents some interesting copyright challenges, because there are multiple creative works involved:
  • The notes, melody, harmony, instrumentation and arragement of the music itself, which may be written down as sheet music
  • The lyrics/words, which may also be recorded along with the sheet music
  • The actual performance of the piece, whether it's a public concert, a recording session, a video up on YouTube, etc.
  • Plus, any derivative work that's present, especially sampling or "snippets" of someone else's creative work.
All these separate items can fall under copyright and licensing umbrellas, and even different ones at that. If an artist performs a work that's in the Public Domain, they can still hold a copyright on their performance and recording of it. Likewise, the owner or copyright holder of a work (such as what's on your sheet music) may restrict or license public performances of it.
Anyone releasing or performing an original piece may still face lawsuits over plagiarism or sampling.
You can often pick up sheet music of popular tunes in a store that sells musical instruments or pianos. That music's almost always copyrighted, with restrictions on public performance. Likewise, you can pick up a hymnal in any church, but if your choir wants to sing those songs, licensing may be necessary.
In a nutshell, sheet music is a simpler representation than a performance or recording, and its copyright/licensing issues are likewise simpler, but they still exist, just as any creative work. Elizium23 (talk) 23:33, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

Freedom of Panorama

Hello, I have been recently cropping pictures I find on Commons to serve as images for the embassies of Brazil in Wikipedia, however it has come to my attention that freedom of panorama is something that exists, and that it is something not every country adopts. I frankly have no clue if what I did goes against the censorship in South Africa, R. Congo and Slovenia (the countries I cropped images from, I did it for Australia as well but they have freedom there). I ask that if someone informed about copyright and freedom of panorama in those countries is reading this that the croppings be promptly deleted in case they are actually against the principles of commons. Best regards, Otto Von Heim (talk) 18:15, 16 July 2024 (UTC)

Freedom of Panorama is a copyright exemption, it has nothing to do with privacy or public security laws. @JWilz12345: Abzeronow (talk) 18:17, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
Yes, but the countries I cited don't have this exemption, so I don't know if the croppings I did, that focus on a specific building, are copyright free. Otto Von Heim (talk) 18:23, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
@Otto Von Heim can you mention what files or deletion requests are you referring to? JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 18:25, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
It would be File:Ljubljana - Trg republike 3.jpg, File:Avenue Amilcar Cabral Nord (cropped).jpg and File:Touchstone House.jpg, I didn't link it because it caused the actual image to appear here instead of just the link, oh well. Otto Von Heim (talk) 18:35, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
Yeah, I think all 3 are too recent to be public domain buildings. First looks like a 1960s building to me so the earliest possible date would be in the 2030s. Abzeronow (talk) 18:42, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
@Otto Von Heim
Re: File:Ljubljana - Trg republike 3.jpg, I'll refer it to TadejM who is active at reviewing images of Slovenian public buildings and monuments, having nominated many of them in the past (see Category:Slovenian FOP cases/deleted).
Re: File:Touchstone House.jpg, per this site (which does not seem to be of help): The original building on the site was built in 1895 as a warehouse and although this was substantially damaged in a fire the original façade was preserved and has been incorporated into the new building.
The one in Congo-Brazzaville obviously looks recent enough, but per COM:FOP Republic of the Congo, copyrighted public space works can only be freely used in television broadcasts and cinematography (not photography), as per Art.33(4) of their cppyright law. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 18:47, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
Some background: copyright exists even in works of architecture (like embassy buildings) and sculptural monuments, nd the copyright holders are usually the designers (architects or sculptors) who authored those works or their heirs if they are already dead. Sometimes, like Korea's King Sejong Monument, the copyright was transferred to the State, and so the Government holds the copyright (SoKor's Ministry of Culture in this case). Usually, these holders have the exclusive right to control any instance of sharing, publication, or distribution of the works' images or appearances in visual media (inclusive of videos and other audio-visual media). Copyrights expire around 50-70-80-95-100 years after the authors' deaths, with the posthumous terms varying by country.
In around 80+ countries, there are copyright limitations that state reproduction of images of architectural works is not an infringement of copyright, and in around 70+ countries this copyright limitation extends to sculptural works permanently found in public spaces (usually outdoors). That is the essence of FoP: the freedom to share, publish, and/or distribute images of such copyrighted works in public spaces without the need of permission or payment of royalties to the work authors or their heirs/copyright holders.
And if you are curious, South Korea is not one of those countries, disallowing commercial uses of copies of such public landmarks (so no commercial FoP =  Not OK for Commons). The only permitted licenses here – CC-BY, CC-BY-SA, CC-zero, and PD-user – mandate unrestricted commercial reuses.
Note that in a no-FoP country like South Korea, once a work fell into public domain, it can be freely licensed under the said commercial licenses even without permissions from the heirs of authors or copyright holder. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 18:37, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
So it appears those 3 images I made via cropping should be deleted after all, I'll have to pay attention to the FoP for future croppings I try to do. Otto Von Heim (talk) 18:46, 16 July 2024 (UTC)

Category set by template cannot be changed

Dear all, I have recently edited Template:Gambiayear to reflect a change in the category naming process ("Gambia" → "the Gambia"), see here.

This template is used in Category:1707 in the Gambia.

Now, what my template edit should have done is changing the hardcoded category it gives the 1707 one from Category:Gambia in the 1700s (old category) to Category:The Gambia in the 1700s (new category). It also does show me the new category at the bottom of the page, see fig. 1 However, in cat tree, it is not a subcategory of that new category (see fig. 2), but still filed under the old category (see fig. 3). What needs to be done?

The only explanation I could think of is that the Wikidata-Item is still filed under Category:1707 in Gambia. But I reckon this shouldn't be a problem? Fallen Sheep (talk) 19:05, 16 July 2024 (UTC)

I have the same problem regarding the parent company in Category:The Gambia in the 1700s, template here is Template:Gambia decade. Fallen Sheep (talk) 19:08, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
You can open the edit view and immediately save it without changes. That way the page categories are refreshed. What is nice is that the edit doesn’t even get recorded so the histories don’t get cluttered with null edits. In fact, I already did so for a couple of categories. --Geohakkeri (talk) 19:17, 16 July 2024 (UTC)

I was really looking for a way without too many manual edits. Thank you, for your help, too. Greatly appreciated :) Fallen Sheep (talk) 19:43, 16 July 2024 (UTC)

The platform shown in the Picture B...Can anyone tell what this is called so I can find the category?

Picture A
Picture B

There is an outdoor platform with flat roof on almost every campus in Taiwan, but it looks like a platform for overlooking military parades. As shown Picture B, a platform was built in the school yard and served as a podium for teachers to speak to students during morning assembly. And Picture A is a platform for military parades in the military base. From my perspective, they look very similar, with almost no differences in the architectural design. However, I have never been living in English speaking country, so I don't know what you would call the former (which mean the platform shown in the Picture B). Military parade platform? Command platform? Military parade podium? Command podium?--125.230.82.128 01:20, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

I recommend you take a a look from the parent category Category:Taiwan if there is anything that comes to mind. Specifically, Category:Architectural elements in Taiwan, Category:Structures in Taiwan and Category:Schools in Taiwan could be relevant. (I have looked, but did not find a category that would really suit your purpose. It is not a balcony, a porch, maybe a stage?)
Maybe even a new category would be appropriate. It could be a subcategory of Category:Outdoor stages in Taiwan and Category:School buildings in Taiwan (or School elements?), for instance? Fallen Sheep (talk) 09:40, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

I have concluded that since this is a radioactive topic, we need to be discreet as possible. It's like when we see some edit that needs oversighting/revdel, not to go posting it on a public noticeboard and draw attention to it, per en:WP:BEANS and whatnot. Elizium23 (talk) 05:58, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
@Elizium23: What about how to handle the more borderline cases that aren't obviously "porn" but would still none the less probably be illigal in the United States where the servers are? Because I don't think it's worth contacting legal for every single image of a naked child that's been hosted on here for years but that doesn't neccessarily mean they aren't probablematic and/or shouldn't be deleted as such either. But it seems like there's no way to deal with those instances because people can just go off about how the platform isn't censored and/or say we should contact legal if it's actually an issue. We obviously should and do have the ability to regulate our own content without the only two options being either we contact the WMF foundation or nothing happens because people are to busy bitching about censorship. --Adamant1 (talk) 12:50, 18 July 2024 (UTC)

I think the answer is that it is less about where you discuss it and more about what you say. Speculating about someone's off-wiki activities is certainly not productive. As much as possible, the discussion should focus on what content is acceptable, not on who uploaded it.

On the other hand:

  • Where there is a single-purpose account that repeatedly uploads material that is deleted for more or less the same reason, we almost always block that account. If you think that has failed to happen in some case, absolutely bring the matter to COM:AN/U but, please, focus on the user's behavior, not their character.
  • Similarly, where there is a pattern of an account whose contributions are broad uploading a large volume of material that is deleted for a single reason, it is usually appropriate for an admin to warn them that they would do well to stay away from uploading material that is even adjacent to that area, because further uploads deleted for the same reason are likely to result in sanctions up to and including a ban. And a non-admin can certainly come to COM:AN/U to raise the issue.

Further: if your question is a more abstract one about policy, I don't see any problem about raising it in COM:VP, etc., but again, try to keep it focused on content, and possibly if necessary behavior, but not on character, speculation, etc. - Jmabel ! talk 17:26, 18 July 2024 (UTC)

Trouble understanding/using automated tools

Since I'm not a content creator or author, most of my work here on Commons involves finding files to delete/report and filing those reports on them. However, I'm encountering an uphill struggle in finding automated tools that ease those reporting methods. Awhile ago I found several hundred files that needed to be processed, and this could be partially automated with a generalized tool, but not fully automated, much to my dismay.

Now I've got @Yann admonishing me for filing unnecessary deletion requests. I didn't want to file those requests! I only wanted to report licensing errors! But the buttons in your Commons UI forced me to open DRs rather than "report" or merely "fix" the licensing defects.

The "Tools" menu as found in Vector 2022 on Wikimedia Commons

As you can see, Vector 2022 presents plenty of tools for dealing with files, such as "Nominate for deletion, report copyvio, no source, no permission, no license". But Yann doesn't like the way I used them. Should these tools be avoided? Do I need to fall back on manual filing for every task? Because if I need to manually add templates just to report a licensing issue, I'm just gonna stop reporting them altogether.

These tools are evidently optional "Gadgets" which I've enabled in my preferences. If Gadgets here are a bad idea, perhaps that should be addressed before exposing them to ordinary editors.

If you want help patrolling, if you want to reduce backlogs, and if you want editors to do the right thing, you'll need to ensure that ordinary tasks are automated, and that the automation can do the right thing without me having to worry about pissing off admins just because I pressed a button which I assumed was appropriate for the situation. Thanks. Elizium23 (talk) 09:16, 16 July 2024 (UTC)

Which templates would you like to see automated? --Geohakkeri (talk) 09:36, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
For starters, "no source/permission/license" should be smarter about fixes and repairing license rather than blindly starting a DR. Any automated process that's going to annoy an admin or work against the accepted processes should not be allowed and shouldn't be condensed to a tempting button.
For a full-blown DR there are several actions which need to be taken: the placing of the template, notifying uploaders and other stakeholders, creating a DR page itself, and transcluding that into the daily log. When I was nominating hundreds of bulk deletions, it seemed that some of the tagging and listing them on the DR page couldn't be automated at all. Elizium23 (talk) 16:26, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
@Elizium23: Please see Help:VFC. There are also several other gadgets which help creating DRs with minimal work. And please do not create a speedy deletion for a work which is most probably in the public domain. That's what I told you on your talk page. Thanks, Yann (talk) 21:06, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
Look I'm not a license or copyright expert. I hit buttons that said "No permission/no license" with no expectation that they would malfunction.
It is also apparent that license templates such as {{Npd}} create a CSD request anyway, so if you're trying to tell me that this is improper, you're barking up the wrong tree. Elizium23 (talk) 21:33, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
I don't know what I'm supposed to do. If there's no license or permission then I should not add the appropriate templates?
If I suspect that an incorrect license is supplied, I will not take initiative to "fix it" because this is a legal issue. I will tag it and defer to a copyright expert in that regard. That is part of the deletion process, I had assumed. Or if you want it instead sent to a License Review rather than a deletion discussion? Is a deletion discussion an improper venue to work out licensing issues? Because this is always how I approached it in the past and nobody's got on my case about it before. I'm sort of surprised that it is now an issue and I have been doing the wrong thing for decades??? Elizium23 (talk) 07:46, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
See Commons:Deletion policy. {{subst:nsd}} if there is no sensible information about the source, {{subst:nld}} if there is no license template, {{subst:npd}} if it isn’t clear that the stated license was actually granted by someone who had the legal right to do so, or {{subst:dw-nsd}} if the file is a derivative work without clear information about the original works. Finally, {{LicenseReview}} is pretty much a routine thing to do when the file is from an external source which might quite well disappear (from internet) any day. --Geohakkeri (talk) 08:06, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
Okay I figured out those templates, but that makes no sense if Yann forbids deletion requests, because all of those constitute deletions as a time bomb, so what gives here? Elizium23 (talk) 08:12, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
Well, they are not the way to go if the work is most probably in the public domain. But whenever there are reasonable concerns about the copyright situation, one deletion procedure or another is quite quickly on the table. --Geohakkeri (talk) 08:29, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
Alright, well the PD image in question was probably the lunar map one.
The license was already PD but the uploader had claimed authorship and hadn't credited the real author.
Once again: I'm not a legal expert. I'm not going to presume to know copyright or be able to actually figure out an author just by looking at an image, okay? I don't want to be the guy who adjusts ownership on an image from one claim to another, only to find that the claimed owner really did create it. That's, again, a legal issue I'm not qualified to get into.
{{Copyvio}} was perhaps the wrong template, but again, I'm just a carpetbagger here from enwiki, and on enwiki, if someone claimed ownership of PD materials, that'd be a clear copyvio that would call for cleanup. Sue me? Elizium23 (talk) 13:51, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
@Geohakkeri: You may wish to use {{Tls}} to present templates like {{subst:nsd}} which must be substituted.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:05, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
And if you're specifically referring to File:Nasa--methalox-rocket-launch.jpg (although I have no User talk page record about any comment you've made), this file is emphatically NOT PD and you appear to have erred when you twice declined to delete it and restored its PD status. It was a NASA APOD contribution and we've located the originals and the licensing terms from the authors. And I must say, I'm a bit offended that I've got the reprimand for this issue when the license was clearly falsified by someone you just warned about an indef block for the very issue??? Having trouble to create categories for different projects on Commons

Hi thereǃ I am a Project Manager working with the Wikimedians of Albanian Language User Group. We are running some projects with the community on Wikimedia Commons. We would like to collect contributors' pictures on different categories, but we are having trouble creating categories on Commons as it considers their creation as articles. Can anyone help us how to resolve it? Thanks in advance. Vyolltsa (talk) 13:31, 16 July 2024 (UTC)

@Vyolltsa: Hi!, Please explain your problem better. You created a number of categories [6], so obviously your problem is not about how to create categories. What do you mean by "it considers their creation as articles"? -- Asclepias (talk) 15:07, 16 July 2024 (UTC)

Upload error

Does anyone know what it means when I get the following error message sometimes when trying to upload YouTube videos to Commons through video2commons: "An exception occurred: DownloadError: b'ERROR: unable to download video data: HTTP Error 403: Forbidden'" ? These videos which fail to upload are marked CreativeCommons just like other videos which I have had no problems uploading. Thismess (talk) 18:18, 18 July 2024 (UTC)

Can I download and upload the videos manually instead? Thismess (talk) 03:23, 19 July 2024 (UTC)

@Thismess: you can (probably a chunked upload, since videos tend to be big), but that leaves you the burden of converting to a file format and codec that is allowed on Commons (see Commons:Video#Video_formats). - Jmabel ! talk 05:51, 19 July 2024 (UTC)

"I give you permission to put up the picture" is not sufficient for Commons. We need an explicit free license for the photograph. Abzeronow (talk) 23:08, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
@Paleeee: more specifically, we need a license that explicitly allows derivative works and commercial use (see COM:L). Typically that would be {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} or {{Cc-by-4.0}}. Jmabel ! talk 05:53, 19 July 2024 (UTC)

Hello

I have uploaded the image from the original author however the images are not getting uploaded ... is there any way you could help me ASAP. Rashm771 (talk) 23:10, 16 July 2024 (UTC)

@Rashm771: at Special:ListFiles/Rashm771 I see two files you uploaded a few days ago. Is this about these or something else? Also, in what sense are these your "own work"? If they are your own work, why the credit to Debra L. Zynger? - Jmabel ! talk 04:22, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
This is not my own work I was trying to upload her work as she has given permission to upload is there anyway you could help me with uploading these images 2600:1003:B022:CE4A:F117:BBEA:BCAF:B04A 10:57, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
@Rashm771: I assume that last response was from you. Please log in when carrying on a conversation such as this, because at least in theory User:2600:1003:B022:CE4A:F117:BBEA:BCAF:B04A could be anyone, and it makes it potentially unclear if that statement came from you.
You still haven't said whether you are talking about these files or other files.
Please do not upload files as "own work" unless they are actually your own work. If you do this repeatedly, your account will probably be blocked. Attribute the author accurately. (This isn't intended as a threat, it's a simple statement of fact.)
If these files are the (copyrighted) work of Debra L. Zynger, we need an actual license from her. Saying "she has given permission" does not amount to a license: we need a license such as {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} or {{Cc-by-4.0}} that explicitly allows anyone to reuse the file, including commercially, and to make derivative works. If she has posted her online with such a license indicated, you can just refer to that online post as the source. If not, then we need her (not you) to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to provide such permission by email; probably best to have her cc you so you can keep track of what is happening.
I hope that helps. - Jmabel ! talk 17:12, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
Sure, how do I remove these uploaded files, I will get the required information from the person before uploading and submitting the draft! Thank you for your help. I am new to wikipedia and must have committed some mistakes. Rashm771 (talk) 22:48, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
@Rashm771: if you want to delete your own recent uploads, just follow the usage instructions at {{My bad upload}} to tag the file pages. However, if you think permission via VRT is forthcoming, that's fine; get hold of Debra, get her to send the email, and then follow the process described at {{Permission pending}} to tag the file page. - Jmabel ! talk 01:29, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
Hello I have used the template however the images have not been deleted is there anyway the images can be deleted speedy. I want to submit an article to wikiepdia and I do not want to be blacklisted because of this error. Would you please let me know, thank you !! Rashm771 (talk) 14:19, 20 July 2024 (UTC)

scanned text or screenshotted text

could we upload scanned texts or screenshotted texts ? The material is original (we own it) and are just available free of any charge also elsewhere. The digitized texts are a series of spin-offs of a still unpublished and very long fantasy/Sci-Fi saga, in the form of critical comparative analysis of the six main books. We are asking here since we saw that wikisource lets upload only just published materials (which is not our case : the contents are available on the internet but not published on paper and are not planned to be any time soon). Thanks in advance for any reply SGRPB7 (talk) 00:58, 20 July 2024 (UTC)

@SGRPB7: That's terribly abstract. Any reason you are not describing this more specifically? Normally, Commons is not a repository for texts. Could you explain whey this would be in Commons' scope? - Jmabel ! talk 03:56, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
Unsure we got the point right, but we'll try to re-explain better.
  • First some introduction : despite asking in this English (general ?) section, all the contents are in ITALIAN language only (as is the Saga itself, btw).
  • We don't particularly precisely imagine what is "Common's scope" (and we believed we had just been referring to common'scope in our initial question ...).
Anyway, let's start over again
There exist a Sci-Fi/Fantasy Saga called : PluriLogia - Una Famiglia di Libri Paralleli, consisting of 6 eBooks called "Branche" (twigs). They are parallel polybooks or role books. They are not free at all (we own all the rights), and are distributed in self-publishing on different stores around, but we don't want to link them or promote here. They are not "edited" in classic sense in that they are just for sale but have no ISBN (they are protected by hashing on blockchains and also timestamped on some third-party clouds and partly on the Internet Archive and FB groups, Odysee, Telegram, Mastodon, etc) and so are not published "legally".
Then, a lot of spin-offs had spawn from this main works.
There are : short and very long detailed synopses, structural indexes (lists of chapter's titles) and mainly comparative critical analyses.
The concept of parallel books or role books is the recombination of Leitmotivs (like in Wagner's or Bruckner's music or role game thematic cards), specialization of templates, so the critical analyses focus on just one or a few themes (Leitmotivs) at a time, or otherwise focus on comparisons among "homologous" characters' features.
As of now, there are some 15 spin-offs, roughly in the range of ten pages each, but the detailed synopses are upwards of 100 pages overall. The number might possibly grow, slowly, in the future, but the most themes and aspects have just been discussed.
All this material is also just available elsewhere (from much more numerous sources than the main eBooks themselves), but this time free of any charge (the license is : free for personal use, share-alike without any modification, possibly mentioning SGRPB7, which stands for Studio Giochi di Ruolo Poly Books 7, as there are 7 ghost writers behind the Saga).
A point we strongly believe in : these contents we'd like to share ARE NOT PROMOTIONAL in any common accepted sense.
They don't even mention the stores, inside, but above all they are full-fledged critical analyses and delve deeply in the heart of inspiring principles of the project of parallel books.
Now initially we had thought to share them on WIKISOURCE, but there we discovered an explicit veto for NON-PUBLISHED / EDITED (possibly PAPER) books. And we strictly interpreted this required feature as "legally" published, not just self-published.
Here on WIKIMEDIA, instead, the rule seemed to only require original and personal work. The only doubt was : here the hype was not on TEXTS, but other forms of communication.
In the absence of some really certain indication (all what is not explicitly forbidden may be considered allowed, isn't it ?), we could consider to try to upload and see what happens. In case some admin would take down the content, he/she would eventually mention some form of violation, if any.
(Final note : the spin-offs are not planned to be translated in English, since the Saga in itself won't and it is absurd to decouple them).
Best regards
SGRPB7 SGRPB7 (talk) 13:57, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
@SGRPB7: It's a bit hard to work out what some of what you are saying here, because there are some terms that you've used in English that make little or no sense. In some cases, I think it's a matter of false cognates from Italian, but it's hard to be sure. (By the way, nothing wrong with it being in Italian, Commons is largely language-neutral. For certain community purposes English is preferred, but not for content.)
  • "We don't particularly precisely imagine": I think you just mean "we are not familiar with". That is why I linked it. Let me link it again: Commons' scope.
    • And it looks pretty clear to me that what you are describing is out of scope (see below), so the rest of this is probably moot.
  • "They are not 'edited' in classic sense in that they are just for sale but have no ISBN" just makes no sense. "To edit" in English means to go through a document making corrections and revisions. I'm guessing you mean "published", but that is also a pretty ambiguous word, which can simply mean "making something available to a reasonably broad public" and can also mean formal publication (as you allude to with ISBNs).
  • "not published 'legally'": I'm really uncertain what you mean here. Presumably not that they have been published in an illegal manner, which would be the normal sense of this in English, so I'm guessing you are saying that the way they have been made available does not legally constitute publication, but you don't say with respect to what law. What you've described sounds like it constitutes publication as understood by U.S. copyright law, which is the relevant law for Commons, since we are legally based in the U.S. I'm pretty sure the same is true of Italian copyright law, but since it is probably the most unique body of copyright law in the world, I could be wrong.
From COM:SCOPE: "Excluded educational content: … Files that contain nothing educational other than raw text. Purely textual material such as plain-text versions of recipes, lists of instructions, poetry, fiction, quotations, dictionary definitions, lesson plans or classroom material, and the like are better hosted elsewhere, for example at Wikibooks, Wikiquote, Wiktionary, Wikiversity or Wikisource."
So what it comes down to: how is this educational in a manner that goes beyond text? From what you've written, my suspicion is: "not at all." Jmabel ! talk 16:25, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
sorry, we missed the link. We will now commit to study such Commons' scope.
But let us just reply to other remarks.
Yes, we used EDITED as an alias for PUBLISHED, as you understood. And we also agree with you on some ambiguity of the term. That's why we put some emphasis in contrasting "classic" publishing with SELF-publishing. And you also got it right about the adjective LEGALLY. We just meant the material does not seem to be classified as published under Italian Law, since it does not use classic mainstream channel of distribution or 3rd-party publishers. We did not mean we are publishing the stuff ILLEGALLY in the sense we are infringing copyright ! The books are our own, as are the spin-offs. Under Italian Law a book needs an ISBN to be published classically, so ours are ebooks in substance but not formally / legally, lacking that imprimatur from external authorities. As for US law, we don't know much about. We guess ISBN is required too, to be considered a publication. We are unsure about the legal status of our books. The only thing sure is : they belong to us, and are for sell somewhere as just FILES (regardless they are legally books or some undefined digital asset of some sort).
  • Wikiquote, Wiktionary, Wikiversity or Wikisource.
Here we had just examined WIKISOURCE terms, but as said they would only accept published materials.
Wikiquote, Wikitionary or Wikiversity would seem even less suitable, but we won't miss to examine their prescriptions too (BTW tnx for signalling).
We would need to understand better the sentence : ARE BETTER HOSTED ELSEWHERE.
Here some legal English is required for us to understand the actual nature of the phrase.
It seems, but we might be wrong, that it is AN ADVICE, not an actual COMPULSORY restraint. That is, scanned text is not the best here, but it would not necessarily violate terms. In the other targets (i.g. WIKISOURCE) it would explicitly violate the requirement of "official" published status, which we lack, and are unsure the self-publishing is acceptable (we deem not).
No we will submit the Commons' scope to some AI to get help in translation :D
As was just clear, we are not completely familiar with English, even if we write not relying to AI. SGRPB7 (talk) 19:15, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
BTW : we also own a huge load of abstract 3D GRAPHICS (generated by means of StructureSynth constructive geometry software).
Would you thing that BUNDLING together the texts with this graphics, in containers like PDF or even animated gifs or MJPEG, would add sufficient non-pure-text content and make all the bundle more acceptable here ? SGRPB7 (talk) 19:22, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
@SGRPB7 I do not speak Italian so I cannot help here, but I think perhaps explaining this in Italian would be better. There are Italian speakers here who might be able to help. Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 20:06, 20 July 2024 (UTC)

Image review in commons

In Commons:Mobile app there is a section where anybody can review images uploaded by others and also thanks the uploader if its worthy or propose that file to be deleted if not appropriate.is it only in-app feature or available in website also?
--KEmel49talk,Uploads 06:35, 20 July 2024 (UTC)

@KEmel49: If you want to review recent uploads, that would be Special:NewFiles.
To thank someone for an upload (or any other edit) you can go into the history of the file in question, and there is a "Thank" button. I would strongly recommend against using this feature too much. Commons is not mainly a social network and I, for one, would be annoyed to get a lot of "thanks" notifications in my feed. - Jmabel ! talk 16:34, 20 July 2024 (UTC)

Hi, I wanted to add two short clips of music for a composer's page who has none of their music on there. Is there anything I can do in this regards? The music and recording is in the public domain, and can be freely accessed. 1unit55Apple10 (talk) 14:50, 20 July 2024 (UTC)

If both the composition itself and the recording of the song are in the public domain, then you can upload that here and use it on Wikipedia and other wikis. The website states: "The Court produces videos and still pictures of all its public sittings and various official events. A presentation video is also available in a large number of languages. Hello. I recently uploaded a logo of a public university in Malaysia. Since the existing logo used in the English Wikipedia was a PNG, I found a SVG version from the Chinese Wikipedia by another user. I do apologise for not asking earlier, but I wish to inquire about the copyright status of this logo. Thank you! Scuffedsherm (talk) 14:10, 21 July 2024 (UTC)

@Scuffedsherm: The claim on zh-wiki is that it is {{PD-Malaysia}}. I have no independent judgement as to whether that is accurate. Did you base your 2021 date on something? If it is accurate, then PD-Malaysia is impossible. zh-wiki gave 1962. It also listed the (now-dead) https://www.um.edu.my/docs/librariesprovider10/default-document-library/handbook-2015_2016.pdf as a source, which I see you didn't mention when uploading. There might be more that needs sorting out here but that's enough for me to say I'm not wading in further. - Jmabel ! talk 19:57, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
Hello, thanks for replying! Yes, I did base the 2021 date from the upload date by the original uploader at zh-wiki. 1962 may be referring to the actual year the logo was made. This is the part I am unclear about, whether I should base the copyright information of this re-upload on the zh-wiki info or actual. Scuffedsherm (talk) 08:16, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
Normally, scan and upload dates are completely irrelevant. The only reason we would use them is when we don't have anything better: it gives us a latest possible date for the work. The relevant date is the date of creation for the intellectual property in question. - Jmabel ! talk 16:59, 22 July 2024 (UTC)

Uploading a photo to Shira Shaked Wikipedia Page

Hello, I have uploaded Shira Shaked's photo (which is signed under permission 4.0 by the photographer) to Wikipedia Commons. Now I want it to show on Shira Shaked's both Wikipedia pages - in Hebrew and in English. How do I do that? Shirashaked (talk) 20:40, 22 July 2024 (UTC)

In the future, if you use Special:UploadWizard, it will give you the code you need to insert it into a page. You can use the following to add the photo in general to a Wikipedia article:
[[File:Shira Shaked - Pianist.jpg|thumb|right|alt=|caption]]
Where "alt=" is alternative text and the word "caption" should be replaced by some wording that provides context like "Shaked in 2014". This is English-language code, but it will work on the Hebrew Wikipedia as well.
Note that Wikipedia articles can sometimes have templates that include photos, so if adding it is confusing to you, let me know and I can assist. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:03, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
On a secondary issue, note that there are some conflict of interest guidelines on Wikipedia that generally discourage editing articles about yourself or topics that you are very closely connected to, but there is no rule against adding a photo of yourself. I'd recommend that if you do add a photo at the English Wikipedia that you then go to w:en:Talk:Shira Shaked and add "{{Connected|Shirashaked}} at the top. Again, if that's confusing, please let me know. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:07, 22 July 2024 (UTC)

Totally legit, but I didn't want to do information overload. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:33, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
Hi Shirashaked. The copyright holder of a photo is generally considered to be the photographer who takes it, and only the copyright holder can release their work on the Creative Commons license you're using for the file. Did you take File:Shira Shaked - Pianist.jpg yourself? You've attributed the photo to someone named Jiyang Chen? Are you Jiyang Chen? If you're not, then Commons needs some way of formally verifying the Jiyang Chen has given their COM:CONSENT for the photo to be uploaded to Commons. You can find out more about that in COM:VRT#If you are NOT the copyright holder and COM:VRT#Licensing images: when do I contact VRT?. Now, if youre really Jiyang Chen, then you should probably change the file's description to clarify that it's your COM:Own work. In addition, I strongly suggest you take a careful look at en:Wikipedia:Username policy#Real names because you may need to change your username if you intend to edit English Wikipedia. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:13, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

-- KEmel49talk,Uploads 18:17, 22 July 2024 (UTC)

Intent to use it in en-wiki is irrelevant. Similarly, the fact that it is a "press information bureau" is relevant. What is relevant is that it is an official site of the Indian government. If the pictures indeed originate with the Indian national government (as against being copies of someone else's images, used by the government) then it looks like the same license would apply. - Jmabel ! talk 04:15, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

Block print in commons

I would like to get a print of an image in Commmons. Does Commons provide a link to a site where I can purchase a print? Thanks Spraygal109 (talk) 22:18, 22 July 2024 (UTC)

@Spraygal109: No, but you can simply download the highest resolution version of the image and take it anywhere that prints photographs. Note that if this is for anything other than your personal use (e.g. if you are giving it as a gift), there may be licensing requirements stated on the file page. They can trivially be met by printing out the file page and passing a copy of that along with the print of the image. - Jmabel ! talk 04:22, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

What country? - Jmabel ! talk 04:27, 23 July 2024 (UTC)
United States Teamsonic2011 (talk) 05:50, 23 July 2024 (UTC)
It might depend on whether there are any individual copyright elements also shown in your photo and whether the photo focuses on them as explained in COM:DW and COM:DM. For example, if your photo is just simply of the general structure of a ride taken from a far or maybe something like an action shot of the ride in operation, then such a photo is probably OK. If, however, your photo focuses in too much on or too prominently shows a copyrightable element (e.g. logo, display, design feature, mascot/character image) associated with the ride, then it might not be OK for Commons. There might also be some COM:NCR in place that aren't related to the copyright status of the photo you've taken but which might apply to you as an individual out in the real world. There's some general information listed here and you might also want to take a look at this Universal Studios Orlando page. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:29, 23 July 2024 (UTC)
  • So short answer is "probably" - You took the photo, so you have rights to license, and the USA is a country where such photos are usually ok. The reason why it's "probably" rather than "certainly" is derivative work concerns might come into play if significant copyrighted work by someone else were shown in the photo. For people who haven't had to deal with that last point, it sometimes takes some practice to recognize. Take a look at the linked page to get a general idea about it. Then I'd say go ahead and upload if you think the photo is in scope (potentially useful to illustrate the subject) and you don't think it violates anyone else's copyright. If there are problems, other users are likely to notify you. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 15:54, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

Need to Delete or Rename Photo

This photo is incorrectly named. It's not a NonStop server. It's a rack of HPE Nimble arrays. If you look closely, you will see the words Nimble Storage through the grille. If you compare this photo with that photo, you will see they are the same. People have been adding it to various wikis incorrectly saying it's a NonStop server for some time now. Someone proposed deleting it back in 2022 due to copyright issues, but it was kept. If I file another deletion request, what do I name the page? I'm also OK with just renaming it so the title isn't false, anymore. How do we do that?—Kjsehyrt (talk) 03:09, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

@Kjsehyrt: There should be a "move" option on the file page (probably on the top nav, but it depends on what skin you use). Given that you don't have filemover privileges, it will just let you make a request. Or you can directly use {{Rename}}, similarly. - Jmabel ! talk 04:30, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

Can I Use Social Media's Picture

Hello, I have a question regarding image usage. Can I use pictures of public figures, such as celebrities (e.g., cricketers, artists, singers, etc.), that I find on social media platforms(Instagram)? Are these images considered public domain or fair use, or do I need to obtain permission or a license to use them? IamAnisurrahman (talk) 06:27, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

@IamAnisurrahman No, simply putting a pic on Instagram or wherever does not mean public domain, or more precisely "a license that is acceptable on Commons." Public domain has a specific meaning. It is possible to add such licenses on social media, but this rarely happens. You can see a few examples at Wikipedia:A picture of you Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:04, 23 July 2024 (UTC)
Hi IamAnisurrahman. As explained in COM:CB#Internet images, you should pretty much assume that any image you find online is copyrighted unless it clearly states otherwise. You're going to need to be able to demonstrate per COM:EVID that any image you upload is licensed in a way that satisfies COM:L. As pointed out above, some copyright holders posting original content online do release them under licenses that are OK for Commons, but it needs to clearly state as much. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:10, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

I thought illegal graffiti was allowed per COM:GRAFFITI. Did I misunderstand the rule, or am I doing something else wrong? Thanks. Urchincrawler (talk) 21:22, 28 July 2024 (UTC)

The graffiti itself is clearly {{PD-text}} – there’s nothing original to it really. But did you notice that the website doesn’t grant any free license for the photograph? For that reason the photo cannot be uploaded, unfortunately. --Geohakkeri (talk) 21:54, 28 July 2024 (UTC)

I've read someone else reporting on Help desk with no resolution.

How to search files in categories in category

Hello, I'm looking for a specific picture of Hohenzollern Castle that I saw on wikimedia commons a long time ago. Back then there was a category "views of Hohenzollern Castle" which contained every photo of views of hohenzollern castle, whereas now there are many categories, one for each year (see here: Category:Remote views of Hohenzollern Castle by year) I am struggling to look through these. Then I tried to use the "incategory" search function:

"incategory:views_of_hohenzollern_castle"

But this returned only categories in this category and not files in every category in this category.

My first question: how do you search every file in every category in this category "views_of_hohenzollern_castle"

My second question: I want to put every photo in both categories "remote views of hohenzollern castle in 20XX" and "remote views of hohenzollern castle" for others' convenience. is that the wrong way of categorization? what are wikimedia's rules for that? Henrysz (talk) 03:56, 24 July 2024 (UTC)

@Henrysz: for your first question, I've made a gallery page at User:Matrix/castlegallery for your convenience (feel free to move it into your userspace). For anyone looking, the method I used was what you can do is go to PetScan, click "Commons" at the top, change the depth to some very high number (like 1000000) then in the categories box enter "Views of Hohenzollern Castle" (w/o quotation marks). After that go to the "Page properties" column and only tick the "File" checkbox. Uncheck the blank checkbox. Then click "Do it!". If you want the thumbnails, you can check the thumbnails option.
For your second question, no you shouldn't because it violates COM:CATPRI in particular the "Modularity principle". Maybe you can create a Gallery page instead. Maybe check out some examples at Category:Gallery pages about castles? —Matrix(!) {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 04:28, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
Thznk you so much for the fast reply, this was very helpful. Petscan is so useful, especially considering that commons' search tool is pretty bad, and google (with appended site:commons.wikimedia.org) leaves out a lot of pictures. I found what I was looking for, thanks again. Henrysz (talk) 06:27, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
@Henrysz: You can search subcategories in Special:Search by using the deepcat keyword. But it looks like unlike incategory, deepcat requires you to get the capitalisation of the category name correct. Try Special:Search/deepcat:"Views of Hohenzollern Castle". --bjh21 (talk) 11:46, 24 July 2024 (UTC)

Can I do this? And do I have to state that it was rendered using AI? I want to know because I am thinking of doing this to a few photos I found of low quality. ElMexicanotres (talk) 07:16, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

Hi ElMexicanotres. There's some general information on this at Commons:AI-generated media. However, in addition to copyright related concerns, some of the various language Wikipedias may have their own policies and guidelines in place related to encyclopedic concerns associated with using such images. So, you might find that even if an AI enhanced image is OK for Commons from a copyright standpoint, there's could be a consensus established on a local Wikipedia project not to use it for encyclopedic reasons. How an image is used encyclopedically isn't really of concern of Commons per se, and is often something that needs to be discussed on relevant talk pages of the local Wikipedia project where you want to use the image. English Wikipedia's en:Wikipedia:Artificial intelligence, for example, states: "the community consensus is to prefer human decisions over machine-generated outcomes until the implications are better understood." This seems to imply there's still a lot of uncertainty regarding the use of such images and also perhaps quite a bit of resistence to using them. You might ultimately have to resolve things on a per image basis until relevant policy becomes more settled. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:52, 23 July 2024 (UTC)
Adding to the above, Commons:Picture retouching may have something of interest. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:25, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

Wikimedia forum for photo subject identification?

Is there a forum in the Village Pump, Help boards, etc., either here or on other Wikimedia sites, dedicated to requests for identification of photo subjects, in particular in service of structured data tagging? I'm trying to identify a piece of military equipment to tag in a historical photo, and I'm not sure if there's a particular place to ask. Nicknimh (talk) 02:34, 25 July 2024 (UTC)

You can ask on a relevant WikiProject (usually on en-wiki). - Jmabel ! talk 04:36, 25 July 2024 (UTC)
@Nicknimh Try Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history or Wikipedia:Reference desk/Science Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:31, 25 July 2024 (UTC)
@Nicknimh: you can also place the image in Category:Unidentified military equipment or one of the subcategories if the image is not already included. That will at least mark it for the future. MKFI (talk) 07:47, 25 July 2024 (UTC)

Searching for categories containing slashes

I was recently trying to find categories containing the "/" symbol, but apparently the search only gives results for Category:/ even though I know other categories with it exist. For instance Category:Cornell University Library/Events/ArtandFeminism. Does anyone know why it's doing that or what I can do to get the proper results? Adamant1 (talk) 04:20, 25 July 2024 (UTC)

@Adamant1: limit Special:Search to categories then use the query "intitle:/\//" (this is a regex). It will probably time out but partial results will show. —Matrix(!) {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 04:56, 25 July 2024 (UTC)
@Adamant1: I think the reason why a simple intitle: search won't find slashes is that, like the body text search, title searches work on the text after it has been normalised by removing punctuation. mw:Help:CirrusSearch#Full text search has an immense amount of detail on this. The suggestion by Matrix above kind of works in that it finds over 1800 results before giving up, but mw:Help:CirrusSearch advises against doing this because of the load it causes on the Wikimedia servers.
For this kind of odd question about page titles, I usually turn to Quarry. It requires a bit of knowledge of SQL, but does allow for asking interesting questions of a copy of the database underlying Commons. For example, quarry:query/84375 gets the first ten categories with '/' in their names. There are apparently over 150,000 of them in total. --bjh21 (talk) 09:21, 25 July 2024 (UTC)

Why does Wikimedia reject material 95-and-a-quarter years old as "still in copyright"?

Today is 2024-07-25 and I am trying to upload a newspaper cutting from 1929-04-29. This is more than 95 years ago so out-of-copyringht and I was expecting that Wikimedia will accept it. However the latest date I can upload is 1928-12-31. Please, why does Wikimedia not accept it? - thanks in advance for your time! Best regards Jamie Jamie 20th C (talk) 11:48, 25 July 2024 (UTC)

What newspaper in what country? Ruslik (talk) 11:55, 25 July 2024 (UTC)
OK so I have found the answer. Copyright isn't "95 years" it's "95-and-a-bit years." Specifically, "The 1976 Copyright Act provides that all terms of copyright will run through the end of the calendar year in which they expire." - see page 3 of https://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ15a.pdf Jamie 20th C (talk) 12:44, 25 July 2024 (UTC)

Photo deleted

Hello, i'm a newer user here and yesterday i tried to upload myfirst foto ( i didn't know that i had to choose a free licence to do that.. i'm sorry). Now the picture for my new profile was deleted from the administrator, may you please support me to recover the foto and help me to insert the correct "free licence" i have to use before publishing my firt photo please? Thanks a lot BR Carlo Neto Carlo Neto (talk) 12:26, 25 July 2024 (UTC)

@Carlo Neto: I assume this is about File:Carlo Neto.jpg. It wasn't deleted over a licensing issue. It was deleted because it was a personal file by someone with no significant prior contributions. Once you've made 50 or so other edits or uploads here (that aren't about yourself!), bring the matter to Commons:Undeletion requests and it will almost certainly be restored.
Again: please don't start by uploading a bunch of stuff about yourself. I'm going to have to delete File:My own Profile.jpg on the same basis. Genuinely sorry, and this can be restored once you show that you are an active contributor, if you then want to use it on your user page, but imagine what the site would be like if absolutely anyone could come along, upload their own picture, and then walk away. - Jmabel ! talk 18:17, 25 July 2024 (UTC)
Hello dear, sorry i'm very new here so i have to learn a lot about Wikipedia. If i good understtod i can upoload my "Own profile pitcure" only when i will become "Contributor" correct?
In the same time i would like to know when i will can do it? Ho much time it will occur? May i put in my sandbox page other photo that don't represent my self?
To switch from "Sandbox page" to a "real page" visible for everyone if i good understood i have to wait "7 days" and i have to make "50 changes"; it's correct?
Thank you so much and sorry for several questions i asked...

There is no firm rule here, but we allow a reasonable number of personal pictures (images that would not normally be in Commons' scope) from people who are active contributors, for use on their user pages here and/or on other WMF sites (the various Wikipedias, etc.). There is no hard-and-fast rule on what makes an active contributor, or what is a reasonable number, and we don't tend to be super-strict about it, but so far your only contributions have been to write about yourself and upload pictures of yourself. This is not a social networking site. You are very welcome to be here and make genuine contributions to the project, but if your main focus is yourself, there are other sites for that, such as Facebook. - Jmabel ! talk 21:52, 25 July 2024 (UTC)

I wanted to upload this image of Titica, but when I put in the flickr link it said it doesn't accept that license. Why? Mass uploading photos and renaming them after

I have a large series of photos I want to upload, mostly of Shinto Shrines in Japan. I would like to mass upload them with similar names (say Immanuelle 2024 Japan trip photo x.jpg) and then rename them en masse after.

The reasoning behind this is that the folder I have is currently rather disorganized, and the tools provided here on wikimedia commons are very helpful for figuring out where the photo was actually taken. Because I can see the metadata pretty well here and look at the coordinates on the map provided to identify which shrine the photo was of, or similar.

I did this earlier but I got in trouble over it so I am afraid to do such uploading again. Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 18:52, 19 July 2024 (UTC)

If you're using Upload Wizard, it will use the file name it obtained from your source device, then present the opportunity for you to give the files another name during that process. Is that what you're looking for, or were you trying to rename them after they were uploaded? RadioKAOS / Talk to me, Billy / Transmissions 19:29, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
@RadioKAOS renaming them after they were uploaded. My files are all named like this, and the upload wizard does not allow me to view the metadata. I need to upload the file and then look at the stuff in the description. The upload wizard also is too unstable to upload any amount of files and fill in the information properly. Some of them are ones I can easily identify the location like IMG_3274 is at Mount Omuro but others are impossible without looking at the map linked in the description. I have pictures from 1905 from a school that I own.

I have several pictures of Dexter Very (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dexter_Very) that I'd like to upload, but I'm not able to do so. They were in my father's memorabilia from this school where he attended and then was an employee for most of his career.

@Williampeck1958: You cannot cross-upload images to Commons when you are on Wikipedia, because your Commons account is too recent. You can upload your images when you are here on Commons. After you upload them on Commons, then you can use them on Wikipedia. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:47, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
Probably the easiest upload tool for beginners is Special:UploadWizard. - Jmabel ! talk 19:51, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
@Williampeck1958: There needs to be some rationale for the photos to be free, in the sense of Commons policies. If they were published at the time (such as if they are scanned from contemporary newspapers), the needed 95 years since publication would have expired, and the 'licence' would be {{PD-US-expired}}. If, on the other hand, they were never published in the legal sense, but just ended up in his collection, it is trickier: the photographer would need to have been dead since 1953 (if they lived to 70, they would need to have been older than 21 at the time, etc.). If the photographer is unknown and the photo unpublished, copyright expires in 1926 2026. In these cases the template to use is {{PD-US-unpublished}}. –LPfi (talk) 08:11, 25 July 2024 (UTC)
@LPfi: may I presume that where you wrote "1926" you meant "2026"? - Jmabel ! talk 17:58, 25 July 2024 (UTC)
There are some other even trickier cases if they were first published 1 March 1989 through 2002 (or published with notice 1978 through 28 February 1989), where they would be protected 95 years from publication.
Conversely, not that it matters much here, but most things published in U.S. newspapers, yearbooks, etc. up to and including 1963 will have expired (even if they are far less than 95 years old) because almost no one except a handful of newspapers renewed their copyrights, as they then needed to to retain them. - Jmabel ! talk 18:04, 25 July 2024 (UTC)
Yes, true. Perhaps Williampeck1958 should consider whether first publication in those time spans could be likely. However, if there are no specific reasons to believe some of the photos could have been first published 1978–2002, I think we can ignore that scenario. Likewise, only if we think a photo could have been first published 1929–1963, we have a reason to check for non-renewal. –LPfi (talk) 07:00, 26 July 2024 (UTC)

A screenshot of a RT.com Live

Good afternoon, is it permitted for me to upload a screenshot of a RT.com live to Wikimedia Commons? It states at https://www.rt.com/terms-of-use/ that:

Use of Materials
We encourage free re-use of its materials for non-commercial purposes. All content published on the Site and/or in our Products, such as texts, articles, official publications, and other documents, with exceptions listed below, can be reused without any payment or written license, provided that: - the source is indicated as rt.com and the hyperlink is provided; - when re-use involves modifications to the content or text, this must be stated clearly to the end user of the information. N niyaz (talk) 07:33, 24 July 2024 (UTC)

@N niyaz Sorry, no. It's the "non-commercial purposes". Everything (not PD) on Commons has to be allowed to be used commercially. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:21, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
Right, see COM:LJ for the justification.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:49, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
@N niyaz: The wording is ambiguous: they encourage re-use for non-commercial purposes, but nowhere do they forbid commercial re-use. The statement that the material "can be reused", given some specific requirements, isn't explicitly restricted to non-commercial purposes. They may or may not have intended the statement to include commercial purposes. We tend to interpret such statements very conservatively, erring on the side of caution. –LPfi (talk) 07:43, 26 July 2024 (UTC)

Regarding the usage of materials from Ansar Allah (Houthi) Military Media website.

Hello, this has been really frustrating. The website https://mmy.ye/ is the official website for the Houthi (Ansar Allah) Military Media to upload speeches/announcements and operations. I've contacted the website administrator two times, one via Telegram and one via Twitter. They have stressed that the materials from https://mmy.ye/ and its affiliated accounts (X account, Telegram channel) is free to use, and explained that it's why they do not put a copyright notice on their footer. Unfortunately they aren't able to use emails under that domain due to fear of cyberattacks and phishing. So I want to ask people that are familiar with this matter, if the website admin (via X messages) said it is free to use with the website footer not mentioning anything whatsoever about copyright, will it be able to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons? Thank you. N niyaz (talk) 08:53, 25 July 2024 (UTC)

Image of Item in a Museum

Hello, Wikimedia folx,

I wanted to reach out as I am having trouble with an item I would like to add for a school project. It is an image I took from two items at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame of a purple floppy disc with the Artist Formerly Known as Prince symbol on it and a letter from Paisley Park enterprises explaining what is on the floppy disc.

I think this is a copyright red flag, but I really want to submit this for a project, so I thought I would double check before moving onto something new entirely.

Thank you for the help, Cassandra Clinder92 (talk) 12:52, 26 July 2024 (UTC)

If it is relevant for your school project, it is probably fair use there (especially so if your school project is not online), but that has nothing to do with Wikimedia Commons. Please don't upload it here. - Jmabel ! talk 17:53, 26 July 2024 (UTC)

How to fill in "Source URL:"?

Delete Upload

Hi! On February, I uploaded an image, but now I want to delete this photo. I need your help.Thanx Denzilhan (talk) 17:26, 26 July 2024 (UTC)

@Denzilhan: I assume you mean File:ÜMİT PAMUKÇU.jpg. When you upload a photo, you normally have only 7 days to change your mind, but I see that this is nearly identical to File:Ümit Pamukçu.jpg, which you also uploaded (it looks like probably a lightened version of the same image). Neither is in use, and there is really no reason to have two versions of this. So are you saying you'd like the former deleted, but the latter should remain? I think that would be easy to do on a courtesy basis (I'd just turn the former into a redirect to the latter). - Jmabel ! talk 18:23, 26 July 2024 (UTC)

For an article on an artist, can I upload images of his paintings?

I've written a draft article on an artist and want to incorporate images of individual paintings. I have permission from the artist's wife to use images on their website. How do I do this? Evbless (talk) 20:16, 25 July 2024 (UTC)

@Evbless: "I have permission from the artist's wife to use images on their website." May I guess from your edits that this is about Peter Stilton? Is his wife the heir to his intellectual property? Does the permission she gave consist of a specific license explicitly allowing commercial use and derivative works, with her granting of the license publicly visible somewhere online? If so, could you please link it; if not, could you better explain what you've got? - Jmabel ! talk 21:58, 25 July 2024 (UTC)
Hi Evbless. You might want to take a look at COM:L, COM:LRV, COM:REUSE and COM:ENFORCE for general reference because Commons (as posted above) requires licenses that place very few restrictions on re-use. The better you understand what this means, the better you'll be able to the artist's wife. Even better would be to ask her to consult with whoever's in charge of the artist's intellectual property rights to make sure releasing the content is such a way is the best thing to do. Once something has been uploaded to Commons under an acceptable license, it's hard to get it removed at a later date and it's hard to control how it's going to be reused by others. You might want to upload the images to use in some English Wikipedia article, but it will be very hard to stop others from using the images in other ways. So, you might want to make sure the artist's wife understands and is OK with this before uploading anything to Commons. An alternative to Commons would be to upload the images locally to English Wikipedia as en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. This won't guarantee someone won't still try to reuse the images, but a non-free license is way more restrictive and makes it much harder to do so. Anything you upload will need to comply with English Wikipedia's non-free content use policy, which can be tricky; for example, you may not use non-free content in drafts. Once the draft you're working on has been approved as an article, though, you should be able to upload one or two of the artist's more notable or criticaly acclaimed works as representative examples. You won't be able to upload the artist's entire catalog as non-free content, but one or two which might be OK. Finally, since you seem fairly new to English Wikipedia editing, you might want to ask for advice about your draft on the talk page for en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Visual arts. Images aren't a requirement for a Wikipedia article, but you will need to demonstrate that artist you're writing about meets en:Wikipedia:Notability (people). The members of that particular WikiProject might be able to help you with that. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:03, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
Thank you so much for showing me a way forward! I'll ask Stilton's wife about the license and try uploading as non-free content. You make the point that before adding images, I need to get this approved as an article. I'll ask for advice from the page you recommend. (I know I need to show where the resumes I've used are coming from.)
One more question: it appears that to save changes, I click "Publish." What is the difference between this and the draft being an article?
Thank you again. Evelyn Evbless (talk) 21:51, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
@Evbless: "What is the difference between this and the draft being an article?" Barely related. You'll notice that on this page, when you make a comment, the label is "publish changes". "Publish" in this case just mean "write to the wiki." When the draft is published (yup, same word) as an article, that is really a matter of moving it from the "Draft" namespace to mainspace. - Jmabel ! talk

Hello, I have uploaded my first file and I am having trouble properly editing its metadata.

In particular, I would like to move the phrase "For further information on copyright, see IETF website." into the Licensing section or an appropriate parameter in the summary box - additionally, I am having trouble getting the {Created with Inkscape} template to put the information into the appropriate place (was I supposed to use it during file creation, not after?).

Any assistance with either of these two issues would be appreciated. Tule-hog (talk) 07:05, 26 July 2024 (UTC)

@Tule-hog: Is this what you wanted on the first front?
On the second, I don't understand what you are asking for. What would you consider a more appropriate place?
Jmabel ! talk 17:44, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
1st front: yes perfect!
2nd front: See for example this file's "SVG development" section, the same for others in Category:Created with Inkscape. Just pasting the template I used into the other fields parameter doesn't seem to work unfortunately. Tule-hog (talk) 19:00, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
Looking more closely, though, I think you are wrong about the permission here. At your linked IETF website "Am I allowed to reproduce extracts from RFCs? … It is common to use extracts from RFCs that are in the form of computer code by incorporating them in software. This is the only usage formally allowed by the current IETF rules (RFC 5378). Generally speaking the IETF Trust will tolerate fair use of other extracts, but you must indicate the source of the extract and you must mention the original copyright statement if present."
This extract is clearly not computer code. Why do you think it is permissible? - Jmabel ! talk 17:49, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
While the website has the information for all RFCs, RFC 2828 (see pg. 211) has the relevant statement. I altered to use {attribution} and include the required excerpt.
Thanks for taking the time to review this. Tule-hog (talk) 18:53, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
@Tule-hog: A license still needs to be granted by you as the creator of that specific SVG file. --Geohakkeri (talk) 20:46, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
Did you manually convert the {Created with Inkscape} into the {igen}? Perhaps the 'auto-sorting' feature requires me to use a script? Tule-hog (talk) 23:33, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
We don't really have much of a standard for where a "Created with …" template goes. I usually just make it part of the description; see File:Gas Works pano 01.jpg for an example. If you want to do it with "other fields" in {{Information}} there are a few ways to do it; a typical syntax would be Other fields= {{ InFi | Row caption of your choosing |{{Created with Inkscape}} }}. - Jmabel ! talk 00:55, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
Yes, I did that manually. What is the auto-sorting feature? --Geohakkeri (talk) 09:11, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for doing that. I am referring to whatever is meant by the alert banner on {Created with Inkscape}; I think I initially misunderstood its scope. Tule-hog (talk) 09:16, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
@Tule-hog: no idea what you mean by "auto-sorting feature" but, much more importantly, I don't see how the permission statement you quote allows us to keep this file. It allows only "derivative works that comment on or otherwise explain it or assist in its implementation". That is not much beyond "fair use", though it is a bit more capacius. It does not allow arbitrary derivative works, so I believe it does not qualify for Commons.
That would be more than sufficient to upload it to en-wiki for use in an article there under the policy explained at en:Wikipedia:Non-free content, but not for uploading to Commons. Possibly you could argue that this diagram is so simple as to be below the threshold of originality and is therefore in the public domain and we can keep it on that basis, but if we are accepting the copyright as accurate (and it seems you do), it does not have a license that is useful to us. - Jmabel ! talk 15:51, 27 July 2024 (UTC)

Clearly not own work

Hi. What do we do with images that are uploaded as own work and has a license template, but are clearly not own work? I was going to tag it with {{Nsd}}, but I thought own work images don't have to have a source. The image in question is File:Lombok abad 19.jpg, thanks. @CanonNi: If you think the speedy-deletion tag would be confusing, you can always start a proper DR. - Jmabel ! talk 16:01, 27 July 2024 (UTC)

Error Message "There are 4 errors with the above forms. Correct the errors and try submitting again".

The above might sound simple enough, but it is not and very frustrating when there is nothing telling me what the 4 errors are and I have spend the last hour trying to go back and double check and figure it out but I still can't work out what the error message is and hence I cannot submit and finalise my work. I am hoping that you can advise what the typical "errors" that lead to this message are so that I can double check? Rabbitoh101 (talk) 23:50, 27 July 2024 (UTC)

@Rabbitoh101: Similarly, your question might sound simple, but with no mention of what form you are talking about, no one has much chance to help you. - Jmabel ! talk 01:50, 28 July 2024 (UTC)

Upload

If I want to upload a photo from YouTube, what do I do? Karizaki sign (talk) 19:30, 28 July 2024 (UTC)

Screenshots from audiovisual works (such as films, television broadcasts, video clips) are often the property of its producer or creator and they may not be uploaded to Commons unless the work itself is in the public domain or released under a free license or unless the copyright holder is willing to release the screenshot under a free license. But if you got that cleared and the screenshot will be educationally useful, you’re good to go. Always remember to credit the author, provide the source and state the granted license. --Geohakkeri (talk) 22:29, 28 July 2024 (UTC)
Also, some YouTube videos are free-licensed. See https://smartcopying.edu.au/how-to-find-creative-commons-material-using-youtube/, but make sure you don't use videos that are licensed only "ND" and/or "NC", which do not meet Commons' criteria for free licensing. - Jmabel ! talk 01:08, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
